Whilst The Civic Society believes that the proposals go a long way to achieving barrier free movement both into and inside the building, members were very concerned with the insensitive design of the handrails to the front entrance steps. The steps are enclosed by original brickwork topped with attractive original ironwork and two lamps characteristic of the craftsmanship of the period of the buildings construction. The enclosing boundary railings are also attractive examples of the period and form a well integrated entity to the setting of the building. We strongly urge that the
new handrails and their fixings are more sensitively designed to fit harmoniously with the character of the historic asset.
